Early life
Preston was born as Kelly Kamalelehua Palzis in Honolulu, Hawaii.[citation needed] Her mother, Linda Carlson,[1] was an administrator of a mental health center, and her father, who worked for an agricultural firm, drowned when Preston was three years old.[2] Her adoptive father was Peter Palzis, a personnel director, and her stepfather was Lee Carlson.[3][4] She spent time living in Iraq and Australia as a result of her biological father's work when she was a child. While living in Australia, she attended Pembroke School in Adelaide. She later attended Punahou School and studied drama and theater at the University of Southern California.[5]
Career
She began her
modeling career as a teenager. At sixteen, she was discovered by a fashion photographer who helped her get acting work in
commercials and other small parts, which eventually developed into a successful movie career. She is a spokesperson for
Neutrogena and appears in print and television ads.
[citation needed]
She was featured in the chart-topping Maroon 5 music video, "She Will Be Loved" in 2004. The video features a love triangle and romantic scenes between Preston and Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine.
Personal life
Marriage & family
Preston was married to actor Kevin Gage from 1987 to 1989.[6] She also had relationships with George Clooney and Charlie Sheen.[6] Clooney's famous pet pig, Max, was a gift from Preston that Clooney kept after the couple split up.[7] Sheen presented Preston with a 2.5 carat pink diamond engagement ring when he proposed to her in 1989, although they never married.[6] After living with Sheen for one year, she ended the relationship in 1990, shortly after an incident in which Sheen accidentally shot her in the arm.[6]
Preston first met John Travolta in 1987 while filming The Experts.[8] The pair married in 1991. Two ceremonies had to be conducted because the first, performed in Paris on September 5, 1991 by a French Scientologist minister (both Preston and Travolta are Scientologists), was legally invalid. The second ceremony took place a week later, on September 12, in Daytona Beach, Florida.[citation needed]
Their son, Jett, who was born on April 13, 1992, died on January 2, 2009 while the family was on holiday in
The Bahamas.
[9][10] The cause of death was attributed to a
seizure.
[11] Jett, who had a history of seizures,
[12] reportedly suffered from
Kawasaki disease in early childhood.
[13] Preston and Travolta also have a daughter, Ella Bleu, born in 2000.
Health research
Recently, she has taken up the issue of overmedication and children. She has advocated that schools are forcing or pressuring students and their families to medicate them for ADD unnecessarily. She has testified before the Florida state legislature encouraging the passage of a bill to ban such practice. A federal law to that effect became law in July 2005, though only schools receiving federal funding are subject to its terms.[citation needed]
She also devotes much of her time as a board member of the Children's Health Environmental Coalition (CHEC), a non-profit organization dedicated to educating parents about environmental toxins and potential health hazards for children with illnesses. She joined after her son Jett was diagnosed with Kawasaki syndrome, an illness that she suggests affects children and results in severe allergies and asthma attacks (although Kawasaki syndrome is known to cause coronary artery aneurysms if not treated but is not associated with causing asthma or allergies).[citation needed]
