The X Games is an annual multi-sport event with a focus on action sports. The X Games airs live on ESPN and ABC, and is broken into seasons: the Winter X Games—held in January or February—and the X Games—usually held in August. The Winter X Games home is in Aspen/Snowmass, Colorado through 2010 (Winter X Games 14) and the X Games home is in Los Angeles through 2009 (X Games 15). The X Games also has international competitions and demos around the world that are held at varying times throughout the year.
Competitors perform in many different categories and styles, vying to win bronze, silver and gold medals, as well as prize money. The competition often features never-before-seen tricks (for example, the "900" in skateboarding, and the double backflip in Motocross Best Trick).
Concurrent with competition is the so-named X Fest—ultimate action sports and music festival, which offers live music, athlete autograph sessions, interactive elements, a mini skate park and BMX park, demos, and more.
New to X Games XII was "X Games Xtended," an ESPN Pay-Per-View exclusive. This unique special consists of a 150-foot jump Motocross Exhibition and a BMX Big Air Competition, both of which have never been performed as a medal event at the X games. This show premiered on Sunday, 6 August2006.
