Wal-Mart in Teotihuacán
In
2004, Wal-Mart faced opposition by local and environmental groups opposed to the installation of a Wal-Mart-owned
Bodega Aurrera store located near the archeological site of
Teotihuacán. In spite of negative sentiments
by these groups and the media, the
National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) dismissed concerns that construction of the store would destroy archeological treasures. The
federal government also endorsed the project which is located a mile away from the pyramids. The store opened its doors at the end of the year.
