The first Terror, (1863), was a Miantonomah-classmonitor, commissioned on 5 May1864 under the name Agamenticus. Completed too late to be used in the American Civil War, she served infrequently until 1874 when she was broken up and her name transferred to a new vessel.
The second Terror, (BM-4), was an Amphitrite-class monitor. After an extremely long fitting out period, she was commissioned on 15 April1896 and served in the Spanish-American War and as a training vessel thereafter. She was sold for scrap but lost in transit. Presumably she was raised and scrapped in the 1930s.
The third Terror, (CM-5), was a minelayer, commissioned on 15 July1942 and she was sold for scrap in 1971. At her time, she was the only vessel in the U.S. Navy built exclusively for laying mines. During her service she received 4 battle stars.
