Trillium grandiflorum, also white trillium, large-flowered trillium, or snow trillium, is a member of the Trilliaceae family (formerly part of the Liliaceae). It is native to parts of the east and midwest United States and southeast Canada, and cultivated in many other temperate parts of the world, including the Callaway Gardens. The stalked flower develops over a whorl of three leaves. The flower is not apparent in its closed state, but soon opens to a large, triple-petaled bloom. As the flower ages, it turns pink. A cultivar is available for gardening. This flower is often most common on steep slopes where it is protected from grazing white-tailed deer (which dislike grazing on inclines).
