The Sound of Drums

The Sound of Drums is an episode of the British science fiction television series Doctor Who. It will be broadcast on BBC One on 16 June 2007,^[1] and is the twelfth episode of Series 3 of the revived Doctor Who series. The title was revealed in issue #380 of Doctor Who Magazine. It is the first part of a two-part story.

Cast notes

The casting of Tom Ellis as Tom Milligan was reported by The Sun and has now been officially confimed by Doctor Who Magazine. He has been spotted on a beach with Freema Agyeman (who was wearing SAS-style clothing). Similarly, The Sun has reported that Elize Du Toit's character is named "Miss Dexter" and is a villain.^[2] Some rumours have gone around suggesting this is the Rani.

The Sun has also reported that John Simm will appear in the finale as the Doctor's arch-nemesis the Master.^[4][5] Although this has not been confirmed or denied by official sources, an interview with The Independent on Sunday seems to confirm Simm's casting.^[6] Simm refused to confirm that he had been cast in an interview broadcast on BBC 6Music on February 13 2007, but also did not deny the story outright.^[7]

It has also been reported that the character of the Professor (played by Sir Derek Jacobi) in the preceeding story will appear to be a friend of the Doctor who turns out to be a Time Lord enemy once he regenerates at the end of the story.

According to people present at the Millennium Centre in Cardiff, where a scene from this episode was being filmed, Simm is in fact playing the newly-elected Prime Minister, Mr. Saxon.^[8] Clips at the series three press launch have shown Simm and on the Newsround^[8] report on the 22nd March show Tennant and Simm both referred to the character as 'Mr Saxon', but Tennant also goes onto say that he's 'more than a match for the Doctor in ways that he can't imagine'. Tennant hesitated before saying 'more than a match...' as if he was searching for the right words. Also note that "MISTER SAXON" is an anagram of "MASTER NO.SIX", if this is the case, John Simm would be the sixth canon actor to play the Master (after Roger Delgado, Peter Pratt, Geoffrey Beevers, Anthony Ainley and Eric Roberts, although Pratt and Beevers were meant to be playing the same incarnation).
