The 1996 thriller The Long Kiss Goodnight stars Geena Davis and Samuel L. Jackson.
Plot
Samantha Caine (
Geena Davis) is a suburban mom and schoolteacher with a seemingly normal life in
Honesdale, Pennsylvania. However, she was found badly injured and amnesiac several years ago, and has no memory of her past. When she's attacked by an escaped convict, Samantha dispatches her attacker with lethal self-defense skills she wasn't aware she possessed. She hires wisecracking private investigator Mitch Henessey (
Samuel L. Jackson) to help her find the truth about her past. She contacts the mysterious Dr. Nathan Waldman (
Brian Cox) who reveals that Samantha is really Charly Baltimore, an assassin for the
CIA who went missing eight years ago. When Samantha is captured and tortured by some of her old enemies, "Charly", previously dormant, resurfaces. She discovers that her former boss at the CIA, Leland Perkins (
Patrick Malahide) has allied with a terrorist named Timothy (
Craig Bierko) in a
false flag plot to detonate a chemical bomb in downtown
Niagara Falls, New York, frame
Islamic terrorists for the crime and thus secure more funding. She and Mitch set out to thwart the plot and rescue her young daughter, Caitlin (
Yvonne Zima) from the clutches of the terrorists.
Trivia
- Parts of this movie were filmed at the Windermere House in Windermere, Ontario, Canada, in the Muskoka region; the house burned to the ground during filming.
- Rapper Charli Baltimore adopted her stage-name from name of the heroine of this film.
- The screenplay was written by Shane Black, who was at the start of the 1990s one the highest-paid scriptwriters in Hollywood. His screenplay for the Bruce Willis actioner The Last Boy Scout was bought by Warner Bros. for an estimated $1.25 million in 1990.
- During the scene where Geena Davis gives herself a makeover, the song "She's Not There" plays, performed by Santana. This song was later interpolated on the Malcolm McLaren song "About Her", which was featured in the movie Kill Bill Vol. 2. In both films, the main character is a female former assassin who is returning to her old way of life. Samuel L. Jackson also appears in both films.
- About 90 minutes into the film, a CIA man first hints that the 1993 World Trade Center bombing was aided by the CIA to get the government to raise their funds to fight terrorism. So now, in their Operation Honeymoon, they decide to do just that. The exact lines:
- "You're telling me that you're going to fake some terrorist thing just to get some money out of congress?"
- "Well, unfortunately, Mr. Henessey, I have no idea how to fake killing four thousand people. So we're just going to have to do it for real. Oh, and blame it on the Muslims ..... naturally."
