The Id is the second
studio album by
American R&B/
soul singer
Macy Gray, released in 2001 (see
2001 in music). Although a number-one album in the
UK,
The Id (frequently mistyped as
The ID) failed to attract good reviews and was later on considered a failure. Due to the mega success of Gray's debut album
On How Life Is,
The Id was often dismissed due to commercial and critical praise of the debut. Nevertheless, it managed to produce the critically-acclaimed single "Sweet Baby", featuring fellow R&B/soul singer
Erykah Badu. The album was released just after the
September 11, 2001 attacks, perhaps the main reason for its flop. It debuted and peaked at number eleven on the
Billboard 200, but it fell to number twenty-five the next week.
