Sleepless in Seattle is a 1993 movie, directed by Nora Ephron, based on the story by Jeff Arch. The film stars Tom Hanks as Sam Baldwin and Meg Ryan as Annie Reed. Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.
Sam Baldwin, a Chicago architect, has just lost his wife to cancer and decides he needs a complete change of scene. He and his eight-year old son Jonah move to Seattle but Jonah thinks that his father needs a new wife in order to get his life back on track. One evening, he calls into a national radio advice show and persuades his father to also go on the air. The voice (and call) is heard by thousands of women across the nation, including Annie Reed, a journalist from Baltimore, Maryland. Thousands of letters flood Sam's house and Jonah finds one he likes. He tries to convince his father to go to New York CIty to meet her on Valentine's Day, but says no, due to the far distance between and that she could be psyco like in "Fatal Attraction". Jonah's "girlfriend", Jessica, has parents who happen to be travel agents. Jonah, knowing his father will follow him,has Jessica get him plane tickets to NYC. Sam panics, finds out where Jonah is gong and hops on the next available flight to New York City. Jonah gets a taxi to the Empire State Building, saying he's going to meet his new mother. Sam, close behind finally catches up with Jonah, who hasn't found Anne. Jonah and Sam leave just as Anne rushes in, realizing she will always wonder what would have happened if she had gone . She is forlornly looking out when she sees a children's backpack. When she turns around Jonah and Sam are there, looking for Jonah's backpack. Sam holds out his hand and the three walk out together, with Jonah triuphantly leading the way.
The film is essentially a reworking of An Affair to Remember, using both its theme song and clips from the film in critical scenes as well as the meeting at the Empire State Building. At one point, some of the characters discuss the film, with Sam commenting that it sounds like a "chick movie." The success of Sleepless in Seattle led to a resurgence in popularity for An Affair to Remember to a younger generation of filmgoers.[citation needed] Cast and creditsStarring:
