Biography
Burrows was born in London, England to a politically active family; both of her parents are Socialists. At age 15 she was discovered by a modeling talent scout (she stands about 6 foot tall), and she began a successful modeling career in England and France. Two years later she chose to pursue an interest in acting. She has been politically active from a young age selling the Socialist Worker for pocket money and joining an anti-racist group when she was 11 and she is now the vice-President of the National Civil Rights Movement in England. She lists Karl Marx, Galileo Galilei, Adrienne Rich and Maya Angelou as people she admires [http:www.afterellen.com/People/saffronburrows.html].
Acting career
She debuted in the film
Welcome to the Terra Dome as Jodie, then had a role in the movie
In the Name of the Father (1993). Her first significant acting role was as an ambitious Irish lass in
Circle of Friends (1995), which included
Colin Firth and
Minnie Driver. Subsequently she appeared in
Hotel de Love. Since then she has acted in numerous other films, including a number of less-celebrated movies and a few flops.
In 1998 she was apparently fired from Woody Allen's film Celebrity for being insufficiently vulgar.[citation needed] One year later she appeared in the sci-fi Wing Commander (1999), the thriller Deep Blue Sea, and The Loss of Sexual Innocence. The following year she appeared in Miss Julie and Timecode.
In 2001 she had roles in Enigma, and Tempted with Burt Reynolds, Peter Facinelli and Michael Arata. In 2004 she played the part of Andromache in the big-budget movie Troy.
On 30 October, 2005 she appeared on stage at the Old Vic theatre in London in a play Night Sky alongside Christopher Eccleston, Bruno Langley, David Warner, Navin Chowdhry and David Baddiel.
In 2005 British Harpers and Queen she listed number 33 in their 100 Most Beautiful Women of the Year and in 2006 she was ranked number 6 in Good Housekeeping Magazines Top 10 Sexy Thirtysomethings.
Personal life
In the past she has dated Mike Figgis[citation needed] and was engaged to Alan Cumming.[citation needed] She is the partner of acclaimed Irish actress Fiona Shaw,[citation needed] and they reside in London.[citation needed] In 1999 Saffron Burrows revealed in an interview with Film Unlimited that she is bisexual [2]. The Independent on Sunday 2006 ranked Saffron Burrows 90 in their Pink List of the 100 most influential gay men and women.
