The City of Rochester-upon-Medway was a local government district in north Kent, England from 1974 to 1998.
It was formed as a non-metropolitan district under the Local Government Act 1972 on April 1, 1974, as a merger of the former area of the municipal borough and city of Rochester, along with the borough of Chatham, and most of Strood Rural District. It was known as the Borough of Medway until 1979, then becoming the Borough of Rochester-upon-Medway, and then had city status transferred to it from the former municipal borough, in 1982.
The city was abolished on
April 1,
1998, in the
local government reform, becoming part of the new
Medway unitary authority along with the former
borough of Gillingham. The city status was not transferred to the new authority or retained by
Charter Trustees and was therefore lost.
