Paris is pronounced [ˈpæɹɪs] in English, and [paʀi] (help·info) in French. The original Latin name of Paris was Lutetia (/lutetja/), or Lutetia Parisiorum, (French: Lutèce ([lytɛs])), which was later dropped in favour of only Paris. The name derives from the Gallic Parisii tribe, whose name may come from the Celtic Gallic word parios, meaning "cauldron", but this is not certain. Other authors consider that the name of the Parisii tribe comes from the Celtic Gallic word parisio meaning "the working people" or "the craftsmen."^[1] Since the early 20th century, Paris has been known as Paname ([panam]) in French slang (Image:Ltspkr.pngMoi j'suis d'Paname, i.e. "I'm from Paname"), a slang name that has been regaining favor with young people in recent years.

The inhabitants of Paris are known as Parisians [pəˈɹɪzjənz] or [pəˈɹiː.ʒn̩z] in English and as Parisiens ([paʀizjɛ̃] (help·info)) in French. The word Parigot (meaning "Parisian", pronounced [paʀigo] (help·info)) is sometimes used in French slang. Often considered pejorative, Parigot can sometimes have good connotations, such as in a famous song by Maurice Chevalier: "C'est un gars d'Ménilmontant, un vrai p'tit Parigot, ..." ("He's a guy from Ménilmontant, a real little Parisian, ..."). Locally, inhabitants of the Paris suburbs are known colloquially as banlieusards [bɑ̃ljøzaʀ] (help·info)), i.e. residents of the banlieue ("suburbs"). Inhabitants of the Île-de-France région (Paris Region) are known officially as Franciliens ([fʀɑ̃siljɛ̃] (help·info)). Parisians tend to refer to people from outside Île-de-France as Provinciaux (i.e. from the provinces). The use of this term, like referring to the rest of France as la province, is sometimes considered pejorative.
