Longfellow Deeds, wanting to be called Deeds, finds out that his uncle has left $40 billion to his closest living relative. When they find Deeds they invite him to New York, to live in his uncle's mansion. Once reporters hear about him they think that he is just a joke. So they send out a reporter, Babe Bennett, to pretend that she is Pam Dawnson, a virgin school nurse, from Winchestertonfieldville, Iowa. Deeds and Babe fall in love with each other. But he doesn't know that there is a camera on him at all times. When he performs a good deed the film-makers edit the film so that it seems that it appears that he is doing something bad. His butler played by John Turturro is like Deed's best friend. Deeds writes greeting cards and sends them to Hallmark. They don't accept any of them though. He writes one for Ms. Dawnson.
He is about to ask her to marry him but then he looks at the television and finds out she is not who she said she was. So he gets mad and goes back to his home. When he finds out that they are closing his uncle's company he goes back to NY. She tells the press that the money belongs to the butler. So he takes the money and gives Deeds a billion.
He and his wife Babe go to Mandrake Falls where they are to spend the rest of their life. Hallmark also accepts the card he wrote for Pam.
At the end the screen shows that Deeds bought Corvettes for everyone.

Throughout the movie, Babe Bennett (Winona Ryder), a reporter concealing her identity as Pam Dawson from the small town of Winchestertonfieldville, Iowa, borrows descriptions and characters from the 1960novelTo Kill a Mockingbird. At one point she claims to have fallen down "Boo Radley's apple tree" and broken her arm when she was a child. Arthur "Boo" Radley is a character in To Kill a Mockingbird. Later in the movie, while entering an apartment that is not really hers, she refers to a lady she really doesn't know as "Mrs. Finch, Atticus", in order to convince Deeds that she lives there. Atticus Finch is also a character in "To Kill a Mockingbird".

Nazo from Big Daddy appears twice in the movie. Once catching a cat in his delivery bike & then exclaiming, "Holy shit", he also appears in the end reciting Deeds' Hallmark Card & then being bitten by the cat who he rescued earlier in the movie.
