HistoryThe City of Longview was officially incorporated on May 17, 1871, but its boom came after the 1930 discovery of East Texas oil fields.
GeographyLongview is located at (32.509147, -94.753909)GR1. Longview is surrounded by many smaller suburbs including: Kilgore, Gladewater, Hallsville, Diana, White Oak, and Lakeport. Incorporated areas include Spring Hill, Greggton, Pine Tree, Judson and Longview Heights. There were 28,363 households out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.9% were married couples living together, 14.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.6% were non-families. 27.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.06. In the city the population was spread out with 26.7% under the age of 18, 10.8% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 20.4% from 45 to 64, and 13.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 93.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.4 males. The median income for a household in the city was $33,858, and the median income for a family was $42,378. Males had a median income of $33,078 versus $21,400 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,768. About 13.0% of families and 16.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.7% of those under age 18 and 10.6% of those age 65 or over.
