Jackie Goldberg (born June 16, 1937) is an American politician and teacher, and a member of the Democratic Party. She is a former member of the California State Assembly.
She graduated from the University of California, Berkeley and was a major player in the Free Speech Movement while on campus. She also holds a Masters degree in Education from the University of Chicago.
She was elected to the
California State Assembly in November 2000, representing the state's 45th district. Sworn-in in December 2000, she had previously served as a member of the
Los Angeles City Council. Before being elected to the council, she served on the
Los Angeles School Board before which she had been a teacher in the
Compton Unified School District.
She was re-elected in 2002 and 2004 but term limits prevented her from seeking a fourth term in November 2006.
Goldberg is a lesbian and was very active in Los Angeles promoting gay and lesbian issues, and while having many supporters, she also had a great many detractors. ABC talk show host and author Larry Elder gave her the nickname "Hurricane Jackie."
She was the chair of the Progressive Caucus in Sacramento. Goldberg has one adopted son with her life partner. She is a Los Angeles native and a resident of
Echo Park since 1967.
