Iron Wolf is a steel roller coaster located at Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, Illinois. The ride, a stand-up coaster making its debut in 1990, was the first roller coaster designed by Bolliger & Mabillard since the formation of their company. The coaster is 100 feet tall and has a track length of 2900 feet and a top speed of 55 mph. It has two inversions: a vertical loop and a corkscrew.
Iron Wolf uses Intamin AG trains.
Both Iron Wolf and
Batman: The Ride, the world's first
inverted coaster, which also debuted at Six Flags Great America (in
1992), are responsible for starting an "Arms Race" for the tallest/fastest coasters of their type. In the following years,
Mantis at
Cedar Point,
Chang at
Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom and
Riddler's Revenge at
Six Flags Magic Mountain would be built taller and faster, and have more inversions, than the stand-ups before them. The coasters opened in
1996,
1997 and
1998 respectively; the latter coaster is the current record-holder for the aforementioned categories.
The Iron Wolf appeared in the movie
Richie Rich.
