Hounds have been used since prehistory. This statue shows the goddess Diana hunting with a hound.
A hound is a type of dog that assists hunters by tracking or chasing the animal being hunted. Its abilities can be contrasted with gun dogs, which assist hunters by identifying the location of prey or retrievers which recover shot quarry.
There are three types of hound, with several breeds belonging to each type:
Type
Example
Sighthounds, which follow prey predominantly by speed, keeping it in sight. This type of dog is very fast and will catch and kill game (hare, gazelle, deer) by itself.
Aboriginal hounds, which follow prey by using sight, scent, and hearing. This type of dog is fast and has endurance, but it is not as fast as sighthounds on the chase.
The 'other' Hounds follow prey by sight and scent. Many of this class are not classified as sight or scent, yet track by both scent and sight. They are fast but not the fastest. They can track things down, but are not bloodhounds.
