Rumors abounded that her record company were to release a greatest hits at the end of 2004 in early March, around the time of the massive success of "Toxic." The album was officially announced later on in the year, with the UK leg of her label taking it upon themselves to launch a promotional campaign entitled "I Love Britney"; with badges, T-shirts, bags and CDs being sent out to promote the album (such a collage appears in the liner notes, with the album cover included as well), and an exhibition at a London art gallery officially launching the album in the UK.
Bobby Brown, original performer of "My Prerogative", has worked with Spears before as an assistant engineer on her previous smash hit album "Oops!...I Did It Again." Spears also wrote additional lyrics for the song (the spoken part at the start), but is not credited normally.
On February 16, 2007 the compilation was re-printed in Europe in the low-priced budget card pack format, with the liner notes made from recycled paper. In it, one of the new songs, "I've Just Begun (Having My Fun)", accidentally has the "My" removed from the title.

Limited Edition
The limited edition of the album was printed in a digipak, wherein its cover is the same as the standard edition, but the colors look darker because of the shining effect. There is a collage of all of Britney's albums and singles covers in the limited edition. It also contains a second disc with unreleased remixes and the Chris Cox Megamix (see below for track listing).
Significance
Greatest Hits: My Prerogative was released only a mere five years after Spears first released ...Baby One More Time. While it is somewhat common for artists to release compilations after four studio albums (compare with Madonna's The Immaculate Collection), Spears released her hits album before she turned 23 years old. This age is considered young for an artist to release a greatest hits album (compare with LeAnn Rimes Greatest Hits).
Album design
The album's liner notes, in addition to the aforementioned collage, contains snapshots of Spears in her music videos. The inside front and back covers also have a "Poster Choice", with various shots of Spears throughout her career, symbolizing the transition she underwent between the releases of her second and third albums.
Track listing
Only the UK edition provides a complete compilation of all the singles released in that country. The Australian release omits "From the Bottom of My Broken Heart" (it is replaced by the Europe-only single, "Born to Make You Happy"); the European release omits "Don't Let Me Be the Last to Know" (the Brazilian and French version also omitting "Anticipating," but including "I Love Rock 'n' Roll"), the American version omitting "From The Bottom Of My Broken Heart" and "Don't Let Me Be the Last to Know."
"From the Bottom of My Broken Heart" is excluded altogether from the album for reasons unknown.
"My Prerogative" (Riley, E.T./Brown, B./Griffin, G.) – 3:33
1 Appears as the DarkChild Remix on US edition and misprinted as such on the International Deluxe Editions.
Singles
"My Prerogative." Having given Britney a massive number-one hit in "Toxic," Bloodshy & Avant were Britney's producers of choice for her cover of Bobby Brown's 1989 hit, "My Prerogative," the lead single from her first greatest hits collection. Having received criticism for her marriage to Kevin Federline a few months previous, scenes of which are re-enacted in the Jake Nava-directed video (chosen as the best music video of 2004 by Rolling Stone magazine), the lyrics to the track were incredibly apt. "My Prerogative" hit No. 3 in the UK and Germany, but unfortunately U.S. radio once again failed to pick up on the single, where it charted at number-one on the Bubbling Under Hot 100.
It was never intended that "Do Somethin'" — the other new song for Britney's greatest hits collection — be released as a single, but Britney decided she wanted to make a video for the track, so, in January2005, Britney did just that. Directed by Britney herself (under the alias, Mona Lisa), alongside Billy Woodruff, her label decided to release the track outside the U.S. and Canada to further promote the album, with it entering at No. 6 in the UK. MTV U.S. play-listed the video, which led to fans of the song legally downloading it, sales from which were now included in the Billboard Hot 100, causing it to enter at No. 100.
Chart performance
"Greatest Hits: My Prerogative" is a career-spanning collection which debuted at number-four on sales of 255,000 copies.[1] The album has sold over 1.6 million copies in the US according to Nielsen SoundScan and it has been certified Platinum according to the RIAA.[2] In Canada it debuted at number-three.[3]
In Japan, it became her first number-one album opening with 173,200 copies,[4] after a few months it earned double-platinum certification (500,000+ units) and it has sold 705,000+ to date.[5]
Within a month of its release date the album receives its first Platinum Europe Award for achieving sales of one million across Europe.[6] for shipments of one million copies inside Europe. The album debuted at number-two in the United Kingdom selling 115,341 copies during its first week, the chart-topper that week was Eminem's "Encore" with two-day sales total of 122,459 copies were enough to overtake the full-week tally Britney Spears' "Greatest Hits".[7] And it has sold over 750,000 copies in the UK earning double-platinum certification.[8] Also, It become in her third number-one album in France[9], where it's been certified Gold (over 100,000 copies).[10] It is also 2x Platinum in Australia[11] where it debuted at number-two.[9] The album has sold 6 million copies worldwide.
The album has reached the Billboard year-end charts twice: No. 98 in 2004, and No. 74 in 2005.
In the music video for Daft Punk's song "The Prime Time of Your Life", at least 2 minutes into the video there is a scene where a girl looks at herself in her bathroommirror. In that scene, for a split second, if you look into the mirror a poster for "My Prerogative" is visible reflected in the mirror, except Spears' face is blocked out by a skull head.
