The Fort Worth Tornado tornado that occurred on March 28, 2000 moving eastward through the downtown area of Fort Worth, Texas (USA).
The tornado passed through the west side of Fort Worth at about 6:18 p.m. It tore a 3-mile (5-km) path through the city blowing out windows in many of the high-rises downtown, and destroyed one office building and a church. The tornado dissipated around 6:28 p.m., and at its worst, was approximately one-quarter mile (0.4 km), and caused damage equal to F3 on the Fujita scale. Five people were killed by the tornado (two by falling debris, one struck by a hailstone and two by drowning in flash floods), and over 100 were injured. The heavy rain and hail that followed the tornado damaged many interior areas which were exposed by the tornado's winds.
The storm spawned another tornado which moved across
Arlington and
Grand Prairie. This second tornado did damage along a mile-wide residential area leaving over 80 people homeless. The overall storm caused
Tarrant County more than $500 million dollars in damage.
A KXAS outdoor camera in downtown Fort Worth was broadcasting during its 6 p.m. weather segment and broadcast parts of the tornado over live TV.
This is not the first time the
Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex has been hit by a tornado. Another notable tornado hit Dallas on April 2, 1957. That tornado was among the most photographed tornadoes of the 20th century. It killed 10 people.
