History
The town was established from part of the Town of Romulus in 1800 as the "Town of Washington," but adopted the current name in 1803. Past residents of note
GeographyAccording to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 172.2 km² (66.5 mi²). 142.9 km² (55.2 mi²) of it is land and 29.3 km² (11.3 mi²) of it (17.00%) is water. The west town line is Seneca Lake, and the east town line is Cayuga Lake. The north town line is partly marked by the Seneca River, which is part of the Cayuga-Seneca Canal, linked to the Erie Canal system.
DemographicsAs of the census2 of 2000, there were 3,643 people, 1,367 households, and 1,011 families residing in the town. The population density was 25.5/km² (66.0/mi²). There were 1,680 housing units at an average density of 11.8/km² (30.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.08% White, 0.52% African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.58% Asian, 0.05% from other races, and 0.49% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.91% of the population. There were 1,367 households out of which 33.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.1% were married couples living together, 8.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.0% were non-families. 20.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.06. In the town the population was spread out with 25.7% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 26.7% from 25 to 44, 27.1% from 45 to 64, and 13.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 96.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.2 males. The median income for a household in the town was $43,259, and the median income for a family was $52,163. Males had a median income of $34,457 versus $24,737 for females. The per capita income for the town was $19,186. About 4.2% of families and 4.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.4% of those under age 18 and 4.1% of those age 65 or over.
