Fallowfield is an area of the City of
Manchester,
England. It lies two miles south of
Manchester City Centre and is bisected East/West by the
Wilmslow Road and North/South by the former
Fallowfield Loop railway line, now a cycle path.
The area has a very large student population due to the main accommodation centre of the University of Manchester lying right at its centre - the Fallowfield Campus, including the Owens Park complex. Of course, the area has many cafes and bars and also kebab houses.
Wilbraham Road is the site of the stylistically eclectic and, for its time, structurally innovative South Manchester Synagogue (1913).

Fallowfield Politics
Fallowfield ward (which does not coincide with the area popularly known as Fallowfield) is represented on Manchester City Council by three Labour councillors, David Royle, Peter Morrison and Michael Lee (Mike) Amesbury (who lives in Levenshulme). Included in the Fallowfield ward is the Platt Fields Park and the Gita Bhavan Hindu Temple in Whalley Range, as well as William Hulme High School and Whalley Range High School.
Fallowfield is in the
Manchester Gorton constituency.
Fallowfield Stadium
On 26 March 1893, the FA Cup final between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Everton was staged at Fallowfield Stadium. This marked the first time that the initial match for the cup final had been held outside London (The Racecourse Ground, Derby held the 1886 replay). Sadly the stadium is no more, as it was demolished to make way for student housing despite widespread opposition.
The Stadium also included a cycle track built in 1892 of shale (but later resurfaced with concrete), 509 yards in circumference with thirty degree bankings, used for the annual Manchester Wheelers' Club meeting on the second Saturday each July. In 1950 this was purchased by star sprint cyclist Reg Harris and renamed the Harris Stadium.
Whalley Range High School
This is a girls' secondary school that is very popular with Muslim parents.[citation needed]
Estelle Morris, who later became Secretary of State for Education, is a notable alumnus.[citation needed]
