Elling is a Norwegian film (2001) directed by Petter Næss. It was derived mostly from the content of the novel Brødre i Blodet ("Brothers by Blood") by Ingvar Ambjørnsen. Other books with the same character are Elsk meg i morgen ("Love me tomorrow", 1999), Fugledansen ("Bird's Dance", 1995) and Utsikt til paradiset ("Panorama to Paradise", 1993). It was filmed mostly in Oslo, the capital of Norway.

Plot
The movie is about Elling and his struggle to function normally in society. He's an autist and man suffering from neurotic tendencies, especially dizzyness and anxiety. He has lived with his mother for forty years, and when his mother dies he is taken from the apartment where he has always lived by the Norwegian government and is institutionalized. His room mate there is the somewhat simpleminded Kjell Bjarne. They move in together in an apartment in Oslo where every new day is a challenge. With the help of social worker Frank and a few new friends, they learn to break free from their respective conditions.
