Plot synopsis
Kale Brecht (LaBeouf) is a troubled teen trying to work through the recent tragedy of his father's accidental death. He becomes sullen, withdrawn, and starts acting out, culminating in him assaulting a teacher after taking offense to something the teacher says. The acts earns him a three-month sentence of house arrest.
While waiting out his sentence, Kale begins spying on the neighbors to pass the time. Among those he spies on is Ashley, the "
girl next door" who recently moved into the neighborhood after escaping her own troubled past.
When reports of mysterious abductions appear on the local news, Kale begins to suspect his other neighbor is responsible and spies on him at length. However, he is unable to to prove anything, as he can only observe the man to a certain extent. Unable to leave his house, he enlists Ashley and his best friend, Ronnie, to help him prove his theory.
