Cakewalk Sonar is a computer program made by Cakewalk for recording, editing, mixing, mastering and outputting music and other audio. It is currently at version 6.0, released October 2006.
Sonar is an example of a
digital audio workstation (DAW) While some pieces of specialized recording equipment are still required, a desktop computer can now function as the heart of a recording studio. SONAR 6 is currently the only major DAW on the market that fully supports XP-64, VISTA-64, full beginning to end 64 bit internal processing, a 64-bit audio engine, a 64-bit mixer, and a scripting language (CAL). Sonar lets the user:
- Record and manipulate multitrack digital audio
- Record and manipulate MIDI data
- Apply special effects, such as reverb and delay
- Automate the process of mixing audio
- Utilize virtual instruments, such as software synthesizers, software samplers, software drum machines
- Connect to other multimedia applications with sample accuracy via Rewire
