It was written by Felice and Boudleaux Bryant and published in 1957.

The song is best known in a recording by The Everly Brothers, issued by Cadence Records as catalog number 1315. The song reached #1 on the US Billboard Pop charts and Cash Box Best Selling Record charts. Ray Charles included his version of the song on his 1962 album Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music. The duo Simon & Garfunkel recorded it live for their 1970 Bridge Over Troubled Water album.
