The Diocese of Sherborne, created in 705 was the origin of the present diocese. The see was removed successively to Salisbury (New Sarum), Sarum (Old Sarum) and back to Salisbury in 1227 under King Henry III. The current bishop is the Right Reverend David Staffurth Stancliffe, the 77th Lord Bishop of Salisbury, who was consecrated at Westminster Abbey on November 30, 1993, and enthroned in Salisbury Cathedral on December 9, 1993 and who signs David Sarum.
