Action League Now! was a television series that was originally part of All That and KaBlam! on Nickelodeon, and was later spun off into its own show. It is made using "Chuckimation" (a combination of stop-frame animation and live-action shots where things are simply thrown or dropped on frame). The series follows the adventures of a superhero league, composed of various action figures, toys, and dolls. The show was created by Tim Hill.
The Flesh — He's super strong and super naked! - A blond, muscular, dim-witted bodybuilder who never wears clothes. He says "Ouchies" a lot. He usually gets in the way when the Action League is trying to save the day, but he nevertheless fits perfectly with the team. He resembles a He-Man action figure, but is actually a modified Conan the Adventurer figure. He was voiced by Jim Krenn.
Thundergirl — She flies — like thunder! - The only female member of the team, as well as the only one that is able to fly. She usually accompanies this with a song similar to the tune of John Williams' Star Wars theme. She is usually seen flying around the city trying to find the Mayor, or any other bad guy causing trouble. Thundergirl does not appreciate Meltman's crush on her, and usually whacks him in the face following his professions of love. For the show, the figure used was a Sindy doll's (British equivalent of Barbie) head on a superhero action figure body. She was voiced by Cris Winter.
Stinky Diver — A former Navy commando with an attitude as bad as his odor - A mustachioed diver who is often seen diving into toilets. He was once a member of the Navy. He speaks with an Australian-type accent and of course, has a foul odor. Has a beach house, actually a port-a-potty located on a beach. He is usually found next to Meltman, one of his best friends. Stinky Diver is a barely-altered 1994 G.I. JoeShipwreck figure (the figure is wearing his 'diving mask' accessory backwards, but it is otherwise identical to the mass-release toy.) His name may be a reference to Dio's "Holy Diver." He was voiced by Jim Krenn.
Meltman — With the power to...melt! - An action figure who is almost completely melted. Meltman has the power to melt, and is the smallest and weakest member of the Action League. He has a crush on Thundergirl, but she does not return the sentiment. Since his only power is to melt, Meltman is very unhelpful. There was a running gag in the segment where he occasionally finds his original nose, usually immediately before being severely injured. He was voiced by Scott Paulsen.
The Chief — The boss of the Action League. Frequently yells at the Action League for their mistakes. Has a dog named Justice. His main quote is "Blast it!". He was voiced by Victor Hart.
Justice — The Chief's golden retriever. She is usually considered the smartest member of the Action League. Often buries various members of the Action League. Justice's barking sounds were made by Alyssa Grahm.
Bill the Lab Guy — Scientist who often messes up his experiments. Often says "I was afraid of this!" and "There is nothing I can do." Has a teenage daughter named Quarky, who became a superheroine herself, named "SuperTeen". Bill's name is possibly a takeoff on "Bill Nye the Science Guy". He was voiced by Scott Paulsen.
Quarky the Lab Girl — Bill the Lab Guy's daughter, who is taller than he is. She once became a superheroine herself, named Super Teen.
The Mayor — The show's main antagonist. He's often made fun of in episodes (For example, in one he was constantly being injured by the League -- unintentionally, of course) He was voiced by Jim Krenn.
Spotzilla — The Mayor's dog. Unlike Justice, Spotzilla is an actual dog; not made of plastic. He is often sent by the Mayor to wreak havoc.
Hodge Podge — The Action League's former accountant who was accidentally thrown into and chopped up in a blender and horribly rebuilt by Bill the Lab Guy against Hodge Podge's will, making him mutated-looking with parts of his new body used from other toys, such as a claw for a hand taken from a crab toy. He then became a villain wanting revenge on the Action League.
Big Baby — A gigantic baby doll trying to destroy the Action League, KISS, and the general public. He was voiced by Harry Connick, Jr..[1]
Smarty Pants — A genius villain that tries to get hidden knowledge by attacking The Flesh, after Bill the Lab Guy input this knowledge into The Flesh's brain to conceal it from villains.
The Narrator — He is in every episode and announces what is occurring in the episode, before and after commercial breaks.
Action Mobile — Not a character, but a vehicle. The Action Mobile is the League's main mode of transportation. It is a radio controlled red monster truck police car. When the Action League is behind the wheel, they often (inadvertedly) run over others.
The Action League resides in a house. Their headquarters are under a boy's bed.
Trivia
Meltman set up his own website in one episode ("meltman.com"). In another, it is revealed (on a college diploma) that Meltman's real name is "Barry 'Meltman' Meltfarb". In yet another episode, his driver's license is shown, saying Barry Meltfarb — Hair: ?, Eyes: ?.
In the episode "Rock-A-Big-Baby", the band KISS appears and their show is interrupted by a large baby doll. This episode was also shown in theaters in 1997, before the Nickelodeon movie Good Burger.
In one episode, after hearing a backmasked song that told people to destroy the Action League when played backwards which was broadcasted by the Mayor, everyone in town is hypnotized and attacks the League. They are later brought back to normal by Lou Rawls singing his hit song, "You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine".
