Bing Crosby's White Christmas All Star Show  Rating: Rating:  - Be Careful Of What You Are Ordering!Amazon has seen fit to mix reviews of a no-longer available compilation of moments from Bing Crosby's Christmas specials from the 60's, 70's, etc with what is simply a fuzzy, muffled recording of USO shows. The white DVD with red Christmas ornaments showing pictures of Crosby and four other stars is the USO recording that I'm talking about. It's fine if you want to spend 90 mins with the music of the now dead, but it has nothing, nothing, nothing to do with Crosby's beloved Christmas specials. In fact, there may be just one Christmas song on it, if that. If you are picturing appearances and performances by his children, this isn't what you want. If you remember watching Crosby Christmas specials in color, this isn't what you want. It's my fault that I didn't read more than the rave review that was first on this page and blindly ordered something I am never going to sit through, even once. Rating:  - Amazon GoofedConsidering the millions of items Amazon offers its customers, the company can be proud of its extraordinary efficiency and accuracy. However, the Amazon description is not for this DVD, which I purchased some time ago. This is a DVD of an old, non-enhanced kinescope of a show filmed by the USO to be distributed to the troops in the 1950s. As one reviewer commented, Bing sings White Christmas and introduces the show, but it's not a Christmas show. There are film clips of 50 or more stars doing one song or comedy bit each. It's interesting to see them, and some talented newcomers are also featured. Miyoshi Umeki, for instance, sings a beautiful ballad. I would like to get the retrospective Crosby special hosted by Kathryn Crosby and Gene Kelly, which is the DVD described by Amazon, even though, as one reviewer noted, the excerpts are short and too often marred by voice-over narration. Finally, some of these reviews are for "White Christmas," starring Crosby and Danny Kaye. Rating:  - One Of The Best Christmas Videos EverThere seems to be some confusion here but the photo of the VHS video you see in the item description is in fact TV appearances of BING CROSBY and often others singing christmas songs throughout the whole video. You'll get wonderful versions of WHITE CHRISTMAS and various clips of fun versions of SLEIGHRIDE that BING CROSBY had recorded throughout the years on his TV specials. Plus a whole bunch of other christmas songs too. Along with the two songs above, a great segment with JACKIE GLEASON and BING CROSBY is another highlight for me. As are some of the family moments BING has with his family. There are 2 minor weaknesses here (but not enough to warrant anything less than 5 stars). 1) Some of the songs aren't christmas songs but the overall flow and the background usually to always still comes across as christmasy. 2) Many of the songs are only parts of the song rather than the whole thing. Nonetheless, this is a very recommended VHS video for the christmas season that really should create or enhance the christmas mood. Rating:  - Christimas schmalzBing, Danny, Rosemary and Vera dancing and singing their way around the back lot made up to look like Vermont. It is what it is and in our family it has become a tradition. |
