Lord of Flies (1963) ![]() Rating: Rating: - Rushed, but not badThis film adaptation of William Golding's classic novel was well-done for the most part. It is certainly better than the 1991 version which is godawful in its interpretation and overall ravaging of the powerful book. The too-fast pace and omissions of important details did take away from the story but they're really not too noticeable. The acting by the British schoolboys was perfect and they were all quite believable in their roles. The black and white cinematography really added to the film, I thought, in that it made it starker and harsher. Simon's death scene is a confusion of black and white flashes, screaming, and then a silence that is more poignant than any overbearing music score. This is one of my all-time favorite books and I'd love to see a movie version done in color, but FOLLOWING the book (I choose to disregard the disgraceful recent film version). Overall, definitely a worthy adaptation. Rating: - Ok movie adaptionLord of the Flies was an ok movie adaption. The beggining felt rushed. I think there should have been much more interaction between Jack and Ralph. Simon and Roger needed much more screen time. Roger was the worst of the kids. You wouldn't have even been aware of this if you didn't read the book. If I didn't read the book, I would have just thought some random kid killed Piggy. They never showed Simon's special place that he would go to. And his conversation with the Lord of the Flies isn't even in the movie. I thought that scene should have definently been included. It explains what the beast was. Again, if I hadn't have read the book, I wouldn't have understood why that scene was even included. I'll admit, Simon's death sent chills down my spine when you see his body floating in the water and "Kyrie Ellision" is sung slowly, even if his actual murder was sanitized. If we got to know his character, that scene could have been much more moving. I didn't like how young Samneric looked. They were supposed to be biggums. They could have had a lot more screen time too as they were one of the only ones who stayed loyal to Ralph's tribe after the Pig dance. I personally think the attack sceen where Jack's tribe steals Piggy's glasses should have been longer and have the part where Ralph accidently beats up Eric in the dark. Ralph's encounter with the Lord of the Flies is unfortunantly cut too. And the end, it only shows Ralph break down and cry. In spite of all that, I think it's still worth watching. If you haven't read the book, it can be confusing though. Rating: - Lord Of The Flies Does Not FlyI only give "Lord of the Flies" 3 stars because I think many new viewers may get bored with the film and it doesn't hold up to 2005 standards very well. I saw the film back in 1970. I thought it was a good film when I was a kid. However, seeing it as an adult, it seemed to lack many aspects of good film-making. I found the sound and voices of the children to be echoing as if they were re-recorded in a studio. It detracts from the believability of the situation because they are suppose to be outside. Granted, the film was a landmark film in 1963, but today it comes across as an amatuer film shot on a shoe-string budget. I really wanted to like this film, but I can't whole heartly recommend it. I think that many people may find it as a waste of time and money. I think a good updated version of this film is needed (I understand the 1990 version is not too good either). Rating: - Splendid film and dvd!Peter Brook made the right decision to film this sweeping fictional story in black and white. It is starkly graphic in b=w somethng it couldn't ever be in color. The DVD has great extra features wth home movies and outtakes of the production of the film. I am astonished at how much of these valuable extras like these survived from a such low budget film. You may, however, be better off seeing these outtakes only after you see the '63 film itself so the illusion of reality to LOTF will remain intact throughout the viewing of it. Commentary by author William Golding is fine but the outtakes and home movies are the really great extras. ![]() |
