No Bones About It #12 (Katie Kazoo, Switcheroo)
Rating: -
This particular book is a black spot on an otherwise commendable series that teaches empathy through the experiences of Katie Kazoo. Hopefully this particular book is an aberration. Although the children are all familiar characters with individual quirks or flaws, prior books in the series have not lauded these flaws. Although the children are old enough to know better and have a teacher known for her discipline, in this book they behave rudely and destructively. The author not only condones their behavior by not correcting it, she has the students unite to mock Katie for being a "goodie-goodie" until she too behaves badly. Although the Katie of prior books would have found an acceptable way to make her statement against animal cruelty, the Katie of this book chooses a course of action that frightens toddlers into loud wails. Although Katie feels a little badly about making the children cry, she is proud of no longer being a "goodie-goodie." This is the moral we are left with. From now on I will preview the books of the series before I read them to my grandchild.
