Breaking Dawn (The Twilight Saga, Book 4) by: Stephenie Meyer
|
Editorial Review:
Product Description: When you loved the one who was killing you, it left you no options. How could you run, how could you fight, when doing so would hurt that beloved one? If your life was all you had to give, how could you not give it? If it was someone you truly loved?
To be irrevocably in love with a vampire is both fantasy and nightmare woven into a dangerously heightened reality for Bella Swan. Pulled in one direction by her intense passion for Edward Cullen, and in another by her profound connection to werewolf Jacob Black, a tumultuous year of temptation, loss, and strife have led her to the ultimate turning point. Her imminent choice to either join the dark but seductive world of immortals or to pursue a fully human life has become the thread from which the fates of two tribes hangs.
Now that Bella has made her decision, a startling chain of unprecedented events is about to unfold with potentially devastating, and unfathomable, consequences. Just when the frayed strands of Bella's life--first discovered in Twilight, then scattered and torn in New Moon and Eclipse--seem ready to heal and knit together, could they be destroyed... forever?
The astonishing, breathlessly anticipated conclusion to the Twilight Saga, Breaking Dawn illuminates the secrets and mysteries of this spellbinding romantic epic that has entranced millions.
Amazon.com Review: Great love stories thrive on sacrifice. Throughout The Twilight Saga (Twilight, New Moon, and Eclipse), Stephenie Meyer has emulated great love stories--Romeo and Juliet, Wuthering Heights--with the fated, yet perpetually doomed love of Bella (the human girl) and Edward (the vampire who feeds on animals instead of humans). In Breaking Dawn, the fourth and final installment in the series, Bella’s story plays out in some unexpected ways. The ongoing conflicts that made this series so compelling--a human girl in love with a vampire, a werewolf in love with a human girl, the generations-long feud between werewolves and vampires--resolve pretty quickly, apparently so that Meyer could focus on Bella’s latest opportunity for self-sacrifice: giving her life for someone she loves even more than Edward. How close she comes to actually making that sacrifice is questionable, which is a big shift from the earlier books. Even though you knew Bella would make it through somehow, the threats to her life, and to her relationship with Edward, had previously always felt real. It’s as if Meyer was afraid of hurting her characters too much, which is unfortunate, because the pain Bella suffered at losing Edward in New Moon, and the pain Jacob suffered at losing Bella again and again, are the fire and the heart that drive the whole series. Diehard fans will stick with Bella, Edward, and Jacob for as many twists and turns as possible, but after most of the characters get what they want with little sacrifice, some readers may have a harder time caring what happens next. (Ages 12 and up) --Heidi Broadhead
This is going to be really quick:
I never actually finished reading this book because I couldn't put myself through it. I realize that Stephanie Meyer was trying to write the series in such a way that it could "grow up" with the readers, kind of like Rowling did with Harry Potter, but it was waaaayyyy too fast and it was waaaaayyyy too big of a jump. It went from a book that 12-year-olds wouldn't even think twice to read, to a book that has blood spraying everywhere during...I'll leave that bit out. I made it half-way through and had to stop. Even my mom didn't finish it.
I don't even know how to make this book sound good to someone who really wants to try it out. Just don't. That's all I have to say.

SPOILERS AHEAD!!! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!
Breaking Dawn is really the best of the series. It's so good, in fact, that I would go so far as to say it is the best book ever written!!!!!!!! There is something about the ending that is... I don't know... satisfying. More than satisfying, it was, well freakin amazing!!!!!!! Meyer wraps up the series very nicely, though leaving some things to the immagination such as whether -- or rather, when the Volturi will return. Bella and Edward seem like they were just meant to be, just as in all the books and it is quite satisfying that Jacob and Renesmee (a name which -- to my irritation -- is mispronounced by a lot of people I know. Read the book and you would know that it is pronounced ruh-nez-may) will be together someday in one way or another. It is nice to finally see Jacob fit in somewhere that doesn't involve getting all moody over Bella and Edward's relationship.
Now for the bit of critisism I have for the book and I guess how readers react.
First of all the Edward, Jacob thing. I think if you don't like Edward, well if you despise Edward what are you doing reading this series? Edward was the focus of most of the books and you cannot deny that even in Book Jacob he is still vital. I have heard the "real men don't sparkle" excuse and well real men don't force engaged women to kiss them. Sorry. It also bothers me how it was Team Edward or Team Jacob. What about the other equally important characters. All of the Cullens, the Romanians, the Denali Coven, the Irish, the Egyptians, the Amazons, Garrett, Alistair, Peter, Charlotte. There are so many to choose from and yet people cut their options to Edward or Jacob!
Bella is a bit more... frisky, maybe is the word I'm looking for... in this book. BUT good things come of that as Renesmee is born AND Bella becomes a Vampire. Yes, Jacob fans, the main character becomes a filthy parasite. Of course I think we all saw that coming in the end. Since book one, I think. Renesmee is just the most adorable little child EVER! She's virtually one-of-a-kind, too. I was quite impressed... or maybe fascinated with the flip between Edward and Renesmee's powers. So if you don't like the passages that hint at Edward and Bella "getting physical" (it does NOT go into detail) then just sit through it and know that it is not pointless, as those of you who have read the book know.
I find it quite humorous (and at the same time frustrating) that even those who have read Breaking Dawn seem to be unable to get it through their head that Jacob and his pack are not Werewolves. They are Shape-shifters.
All in all this is a great book and I would recommend it to all fans!!!! It is by far the best book in the series especially since it introduces new -- sometimes very, very, very old -- Vampires into the story. Buy this book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok... So I really enjoyed the first three books. I couldn't put them down! I am a little against the grain when I say I am right in between Team Jacob and Team Edward. The author could have easily persuaded me either way. It seems like she was on the fence herself and therefore kept me on it. I am 28 years old, and definitely see how this is written for a younger audience... however, that did not stop me and I thoroughly enjoyed myself!
I was somewhat disappointed in the forth book, Breaking Dawn, because of a few key points: The pure, rugged, passionate Edward that we grew to love in the first 3 books dissapeared in this book. What made me love him was his passion and his raw feelings for Belle. It seems in this 4th book it is a bit too "controlled" for my taste. He is a mild little puppy in some ways... and just an "object for affection" you could say. Secondly, we sense Jacob's true rugged feelings in this book for the first half, but after that he, too, is just another character. 3rd, the plot for the end takes up way to much time because of formalities (introducing more characters) rather than playing on the complications in relationships between the Cullens and the Blacks, etc. The closeness just wasn't there. 4th, although the buildup to the end was really cool... there was much to be desired. It was little long getting there, but it eventually got to the "finale." I definitely felt closure at the end of the book... but I would still like to know more about certain characters' futures. In conclusion, if you have read the first three books, you have to read this one. However, don't cancel your plans for a few days to read this one. Unfortunately, you can take your time and set this book down.
