Longing For A Place Already Gone
from: The LAB Records, LLC

I bought this after seeing LBB in Legally Blonde. I have always been a fan of "old" country. This CD is great. It has great songs that are sung with feeling. The perky fun ones always make you laugh. Designated Drunk is absolutely hilarious and The C word is my new theme song. I can't wait for her next CD.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Much more than a Broadway singer
Most people know Laura Bell Bundy as the orginal Elle Woods in "Legally Blonde the musical" but she is much more than that. On this cd, she's known as Laura Bell, the country singer. This CD is fantastic and really the songs deserve airplay on country music stations around the US.

1. Fool Moon-The albums starts off with a major country sound. When Laura Bell puts a country twang to her voice, it's hard to believe this is the same woman singing "So much Better" each night on Broadway. I do like this song, it sounds like an old-fashioned country song.

2.Texas-one of my favorite tracks on the album. I love the beat of the song and it's a great song about being away from your home.

3.Between me and you- the song starts with audio of Laura Bell's mom when she was a young girl with Laura Bell's Grandpa on his radio show. This is a slow song. It's alright but it's not one of my favorites.

4.Just me-A good song about not wanting to be a stereotype. Another good song but again, not one of my favorites.

5.Fallin'-Another great song that has the sound of old country in it. A sweet about falling in love.

6.Designated Drunk-I love this song. The title speaks for itself. It's got humor in it and I definitely think that it has great country music radio potential.

7. Lovin' and lyin'-A good slow song about a well-known subject in country-cheating.

8.I'll make the money-Another one of my favorites. I could this song being playing in a bar-especially a Coyote Ugly bar. It's upbeat and it's fabulous.

9.The C word-Probably my favorite song on the whole album. A simple song about loving chocolate.

10.Long blonde hair-Another great song about a girl with long blonde hair trying to steal her man.

11.Good genes-a song with humor about her family tree. Well, sort of. In the liner notes, Laura said that she started by writing about her family but then it turned out to be something else. It's still good song.

12.Bad boy-A good song about not wanting a good boy but a bad boy. It's got a good country beat to it.

13.Just pretend that you love me-a slow song. The title speaks for itself. It's a nice song and I like it.

14.Dancing with myself-a Billy Idol cover. Upbeat. Not one of my favorites but it's still alright.

15.Lovin' and lyin' (a more laid back version with a piano)-I think I like this version of this song better than the version. The piano gives the song a different feel and I think the emotions show through better in this version.

16.Texas(acoustic version)-I still like the first version of this song better but I still love this song. I think it's a great way to finish the album.

I absolutely think it was worth it to get this cd. I just wish that Laura Bell got more recognition from it. She'll start working on a second country album once she's done with Legally Blonde, so hopefully more people will take notice of her then. I definitely recommend this cd to both country fans and Broadway fans.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Real good ol' country from a Broadway starlet
No review yet and modest sales rank... What's wrong? This CD is funny and perky, very enjoyable from start to finish and also quite generous, with more than an hour of mostly good songs...

I think the problem lies in marketing; just look at this page: this CD is paired with Broadway by-products and also the tags refer to "Broadway", "musical" and "original cast recording". It is true that Ms Laura Bell Bundy (her full name) comes from Broadway, where she has spent most of her (young) life, and that she is a 2007 Tony Awards nominee, but this album is definitely country and belongs to the same category as the albums by Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton and Tammy Wynette. In other words, this is country music as it was sung in the late '60s and early '70s by the abovementioned female vocalists. And if you like them, you're probably going to like Laura Bell, too.

On the other hand, it must be recognized that she tried her best to separate the Broadway performer from the country singer/songwriter: she dropped her last family name (Laura Bell sounds more southern), she titled her album "Longing for a Place Already Gone" to underline her fascination with traditional country and she wore a vintage flowered dress against a rural setting in the booklet photos.

As for the music, the album is a mix of uptempo songs (mostly) and wistful ballads. Among the former ones, there is a stompy cover of Billy Idol's "Dancing with Myself", the rockabilly number "I'll Make The Money", the hilarious "Designated Drunk", which ends with a funny monologue (a hint of her theatrical background, maybe?), the catchy and campy singalong of "Just Me" (with lyrics like "And wind up feelin' stupid every time I hear this song") and the instantly memorable "Fool Moon", which deserves to be a radio hit on the Americana chart (and beyond).

Among the slow-paced numbers, I love the hushed chorus and the easygoing feeling of "Texas" ("Lie back, think of Texas, and you'll be fine"), which comes back in an unadorned version at the end of the album as a bonus track. The torch songs "Between Me and You", with a nice mandolin accompaniment, "Fallin'", and "Lovin' and Lyin'" are also very good. (A second version of "Lovin' and Lyin'", with only voice and keyboards, is the second bonus track in the album).

To summarize: the girl can sing, wrote most of the songs and surely had a lot of fun in making the album (at least, that's the impression you get after listening to it). Give it a chance: this is not dull pop music marketed as country, but a convincing debut from a real country singer.
