Editorial Review:
Description: The Berlin Philharmonic's annual summer concert at the city's Waldbühne has long been a Mecca for classic fans. To crown the season each year, the orchestra offers 22,000 attendees a very special concert, featuring the greatest conductors on the podium of Berlin's favorite outdoor theatre. The concerts are always sold out months in advance. Since 1984, each summer concert has had a particular theme -- for example, there was an Italian Night with Claudio Abbado, an American Night with Simon Rattle, a Russian Night with Seiji Ozawa and a French Night with Georges Pretre. Then, in the summer of 2001, Plácido Domingo joined the phalanx of podium greats. In recent years the celebrated tenor has also been attracting attention as a conductor, and many performances in leading opera houses have shown that wielding the baton is no mere sideline for him. And now the Berlin Philharmonic invited him for the first time, a happy circumstance; as a guest on their rostrum, the Spaniard conducted a Spanish Night and delighted his audience by dint of his musical competence and temperment.
This DVD is a true gem. Everyone, from the individual members of the orchestra to the tiniest of the audience members seems to have a glorious time at this event! Domingo is delightful, the soloists are inspiring and "fun".........altogether a joy, to be watched/heard.......over and over.

I bought this dvd because I had wanted to watch Sarah Chang perform for so long. I was so lucky to find this "gem" dvd. She, a young Korean-American virtuoso, beautifully played such popular pieces as "Zigeunerweisen", "Carmen-Fantasie" and "Meditation from Thais". I noticed her way of playing the violin was different from other violinists including Gil Shaham, whose "Carmen-Fantasie" I own on dvd is also great. Her rendition was precise, strong and soft with such detail. As soon as I got this dvd, I watched the three pieces more than three times in a row. I mean, I just couldn't stop watching her perform. Even though her playing was interrupted by audience's clapping in the middle of "Carmen-Fantasie" and also by a child's crying in "Meditation", her redition never stopped being brilliant. In particular, her "Meditation" was the most peaceful and beautiful one I've ever listened to. Watching Domingo and the soprano was also enjoyable. Berlin Philharmonic always makes sound great.
Technically, this dvd is at top notch. Great vision quality with 16:9 anamorphic widescreen. Great audio quality with PCM stereo and dts/DD 5.1. The production was also almost perfect with the wonderful camera work. The studio is "EuroArt" (not Naxos of America) and region free (0).
Conclusion? You will love this dvd especially if you like violin music. As the other reviewer below, I just hope more Sarah Chang concerts dvds will be released...pretty soon.

I watched this DVD for the first time with some friends, and we were all reduced to ooohs and aaahhs. Placido Domingo brings out the best in everyone, and he sings at the end. The interviews with Placido Domingo and Sarah Chang, and behind the scenes documentary are also interesting. I hope there will be more DVDs featuring Sarah Chang. Her music can fill my soul with joy, and I hope that it will do the same for you.
