Part Time Punks: The Very Best Of Television Personalities
|
Editorial Review:
Album Description: First-ever 'best of' for the British new wave act. Features 22 tracks chronicling their entire career since their start in the late '70s. Includes 'Part Time Punks', 'Look Back In Anger' and 'How I Learned To Love The... Bomb'. 1999 release.
Louis Philippe got his start as an artist, songwriter, arranger and producer with the now legendary El Records label in the 80's. This 2 disc set contains 2 brilliant albums previously only released in Japan, with a few added bonus tracks. Philippe's specialty is light, shimmery pop with roots in the 60's sound of the Beach Boys and Burt Bacharach, although his writing is way beyond the level of someone engaging in a genre exercise. The second disc, "Sunshine," is especially terrific, with the production helmed by Bertrand Burgalat, the so-called "king of the French underground." (The two have since collaborated on great albums by Cinnamon and April March, among others). There are strings, horns, and hooks aplenty; lyrics that are both clever and poignant, and impeccable instrumental and vocal arrangements. The domestic cd "A Kiss in the Funhouse" is a compilation that includes some of the best of this material and his other albums of the 90's, featuring a few outtakes that aren't on this set. That may be a better introduction to Louis Philippe's work, but "Sunshine/Delts Kiss" is an absolute must. If you like timeless, classic pop music, I cannot recommend this 2 cd set highly enough.
