A hip chick from Newport Beach, California, who's just turned thirty, discovered she's the incarnation of the Hindu goddess Kali, and happens to be unemployed and still living with her parents. Saving the world, though, may prove to be a curry-scented breeze compared to dealing with her extended Indian family. In their eyes she isn't just the black sheep -- she's low-grade mutton.



To make matters worse, despite frequent and therapeutic bouts of shopping and Starbucks, and the mentoring of a Taco Bell-loving, Coca Cola-guzzling swami, Maya has trouble just surviving, thanks to the attentions of a Kali-hating fanatic and a matchmaking aunt hell-bent on finding her a nice Indian boy. Maya has no interest in boys. She wants a man and she may have found one.



He's tall, dark, and gorgeous ... and completely uninterested in her.



In the name of all that's holy and fashionable ... what on Earth is a goddess to do?

I know this was supposed to be humorous, but it wasn't. You have stereotypes of everyone -- airhead Indian-American female, arrogant Indian immigrant male, crazy religious swami, clueless parents and adults. (OK, I did like a couple of the aunties). If you don't know Kali or Hindu mythology, you're not coming out any smarter.

My expectations were too high. The publisher's motto is "every good bag deserves a good book" -- therefore, this book is just an accessory to go with your bag to make it look like you're an eclectic reader.

Rating: - Blinded by Stereotypes
I know this was supposed to be humorous, but it wasn't. Rating: - Waste of time and money.
Perhaps if I were 13 or younger I'd have some appreciation for the book. It was on beyond superficial. It reads like a comic book.

Rating: - What happened to the good ol' days when books made you LOL?
Loved this book - it's an insanely quick read though - finished it in half a day, so if you are looking for a book to be around for at least a week, this is not it! I'd suggest it for a flight. I'm pretty sure 90% of 2nd generation 'model minority' South Asian American women approaching or already in their 30s will relate to this book. I.E., it's best audience is a very specific demographic Regardless, this book literally gets funnier and funnier with each page you turn. The character's inner monologue and ego is so ridiculous that it's charming, and um, reminded me of my friends that grew up in the OC. ;-)

Rating: - Funny & Engaging
This is such a fun and engaging book, something nice to read while sunning at the beach or waiting for your flight at the airport.

I liked it so much, I interviewed its author, Sonia Singh about this book and her latest projects. It's nice to learn more about the Indian culture and the Indian-American culture.

Rating: - Funy, funny, funny!
This is one heck of a funny book. Right now my husband is reading the book and I hear him chuckling every few minute. This girl is so talented she can write about anything. This is a book - movie waiting to be made.

Don't read too much into the theme or the story . Don't expect any new world goddess wisdom, spitiutality, and you will laugh all the way through this book, particularly if you are of Indian background.
